Collaborating Agencies
The objective of collaboration with agencies, organizations and institutions is to provide our trainees with real-world experience to problems faced by persons with disabilities. First-hand experience with issues faced by persons with disabilities is likely to be an effective method to achieve this objective and lend itself to a research application for our participants.
HealthSouth/Rusk Rehabilitation Center - Trainees will be exposed to use of a novel “autoambulator” for persons with stroke, spinal cord injury or other disability impacting functional ambulation.
Services for Independent Living (SIL) - This community-based practicum provides clinical exposure to problems encountered by persons with disabilities, particularly with regard to employment and vocational skills. Persons with disabilities served most often in this agency include traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke.
Boone County Council on Aging - In this community practicum, trainees will discover how a community-funded, non-profit organization helps to meet the needs of seniors by providing them with volunteer opportunities and support to help seniors stay active and independent as long as possible.
The Cambio Center - This group functions to respond to the effects of globalization in local communities following the land-grant model. It supports research to understand immigration processes in the Midwest, and strives to develop a premier source of scholarships and education about multicultural and diverse societies. Trainees will learn about the integration of healthcare for Latinos and other changing communities in the Midwest.
